As the Koç University UNIC delegation, we attended the UNIC CityLabs Festival held in Bilbao, Spain from April 24-27, 2023. The UNIC alliance is made up of ten universities facing similar challenges and opportunities in post-industrial cities. The UNIC CityLabs event brings together students, citizens, academics, and city stakeholders to identify and solve social problems faced by super-diverse post-industrial cities. This event is part of UNIC's efforts to develop innovative and sustainable methods of university collaboration while promoting social inclusivity and advancing societal impact. Koc University Research Team, led by their academic mentor Dr. Zekiye Selvili (CASE) has won the local CFA Research Challenge. The Research Challenge, hosted by the CFA institute, is the most prestigious finance competition in the world, involving more than 900 universities across the globe.

"The Outstanding Achievement Award" at the 18th Kadir Has Awards was given to Prof. Dr. Ziya Öniş from the Department of International Relations in recognition for his original and ground-breaking work on the developmental state and global political economy, the political economy of development, the interface of globalization and democracy, comparative political economy of emerging powers, Turkish politics and European politics, as well as his role as well as his contributions as a teacher and educator, Professor Ziya Öniş was deemed worthy by the Kadir Has Awards Selection Committee for the "Outstanding Achievement Award" of 2023. In the project "Affective Polarization and Democratic Attitudes" Assoc. Prof. Selim Erdem Aytaç from the Department of International Relations will examine the effects of antipathy, distrust, and negative emotions that individuals hold towards the supporters of opposing political parties. Focusing on how such processes of affective polarization affect people's democratic attitudes, the project will generate comparable observational and experimental data from multiple countries. With this project, Dr. Aytaç aims to establish the causal relationship between affective polarization and changes in democratic attitudes through novel empirical approaches, and also to identify reliable and generalizable experimental interventions to reduce affective polarization in multiple contexts. Prof. Sedef Turper investigates drivers of public attitudes towards immigrants and the effectiveness of integration policies using innovative survey experiments and big data analytics. Professor Kamil Yılmaz’s article (with Francis X. Diebold of the University of Pennsylvania) “On the Network Topology of Variance Decompositions: Measuring the Connectedness of Financial Firms” Journal of Econometrics, 182, 119-134, 2014, will be reprinted in the 50th anniversary Jubilee Issue of the Journal in 2023, as the most cited article published in the Journal in the last ten years. Prof. Ahmet İçduygu’s FaiR project aims to generate new insights into the factors and processes that foster or impede the legitimacy and effectiveness of Europe’s intergovernmental return and alternatives to return policies. FAiR will contribute to improve the measurement of return policies and enforced return outcomes and will enrich the analysis on the drivers of enforced return.
